Name of Project: Nunavut Nukkiksautiit Corporation Hydro Project
Purpose: Project will displace the City of Iqaluit’s current use of diesel-generated electricity with affordable, reliable and emissions-free power.
Location: 60 kilometres outside of Iqaluit, Nunavut
Ownership Distribution:
The project is led by Nunavut Nukkiksautiit Corporation, Nunavut’s first 100% Inuit-owned renewable energy developer.
Cost: $500 million
Start: 2028. Completion: 2030
Subsidies, Tax Relief, Loans, Infrastructure, Regulation Amendments:
Federal Government: $6 million for engineering, design, and feasibility studies, with an additional $7 million previously invested.
Engineering/Design: Preliminary engineering work was advanced in 2024-2025
Environmental Concerns: Fishing and wildlife risks, potential impacts on the river and land at the river’s outlet have been noted, methylmercury risks.
Is it economically viable? High cost, no guarantee that costs will go down for consumers, suggestion of using currently available renewables,
